Development Direction and Future Plans

The 21st century is an era of learning. Nations around the world have worked hard for the goal to develop lifelong learning and establish a learning society. To comply with this trend and continuously raise the nation's competence, Taiwan published The Plan Towards a Learning Society and named 1998 The Year of Lifelong Learning. Therefore, promoting adult and continuing education has been one of the major educational policies for the peesent and future for the government in Taiwan. To fulfill this pursuit, a stronger community education should be a basic requirement. Based on this thought, the purpose of establishing the Department of Adult and Community Education was to conform to the society's needs and thus the first professional undergraduate program was founded in the nation.
To develop a competent program, the basic principles are plural, active, and practical. The goal of the program is to train teaching and administration professionals, especially in the area of Tao-yuan, Hsin-chu, and Miao-li, to help develop community education and perform the social responsibility of higher education.
Hsuan Chuan University is situated at the suburb of Hsinchu City. It is the only college in the area equally emphasizing Humanism, Social Science, and Management. In addition, named after a great monk in the Chinese Buddhism--Master Hsuan Chuan, the institute especially stresses Humanistic education, emphasizing the harmony between human beings and nature and thus has an extra respect for the living environment. The concept of Holistic Community Development (HCD) regards the whole community as an organic body. That members are coexisting, successful, growing together, and becoming a tight group towards a bright future is even critical for the future development. Hence, from the establishing days, HCD has been the basic direction of the institute. Based on this development policy, in addition to integrating both the community and the school's resources, the Department also has had close cooperation with the extension program. Only through quality community service work and effective training of local leadership the ties between the institute and the community be consolidated and developed at the same time.
Therefore, connecting with the community and helping the community achieve HCD work have been the basic goals of the institute.
