Established in 1997 as one of the first five departments of HCU, the Department of Law is relatively young among its peer law schools in Taiwan. As an institution funded by generous and pious Buddhist contributions, we are guided by our school motto and principle and dedicate our educational effort to nurture the humanity and social conscience of the student body. Specifically, the goal of this Department is to educate fine legal professionals with compassion and merciful spirit, while maintaining a stringent canon of ethics at the same time. For this reason, each student is encouraged to take a course on ethics and professional responsibility prior to the conclusion of his or her legal education here.
As we are the only collegiate law department situated in Hsinchu - the Silicon Valley of Taiwan, we strive to combine the development of law with advancement of technology. On top of the loaded conventional law curriculum, we have offered students with an inquisitive mind courses, such as intellectual property, law of computer and information technology, biomedical ethics, etc. At the same time, we are certainly mindful of our mission to build our students with a cosmopolitan outlook to cope with the ever increasing global competitions. We offered foreign language courses such as German, Japanese, as well as Anglo-American comparative law courses, to prepare our students for studies abroad ,should they choose to do so after graduation.
We place high importance on the practical aspect of legal education. A moot court facility conformed to the judicial standard was built to meet the needs of trial practice teaching. Plans are also made to arrange internship for students in the judge chambers, prosecutor¡¦s offices, government agencies, law firms, banking institutions, and corporate legal departments. Recently, by the joined efforts of the faculty and students, the Legal Service Society of HCU Department of Law has been established. This Society will provide pro bono legal services for helpless and needy people in the Hsinchu community. It will also serve as a cradle for future young lawyers from HCU.
